European Parliament President Martin Schulz is holding emergency talks with Canadian Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland and Wallonia’s Minister-President Paul Magnette to save the EU-Canada trade agreement.

Schulz is talking to the two officials separately on Saturday morning after saying on Twitter, “We can’t stop at the last mile.”
Wallonia remains steadfast in its opposition to CETA after Magnette’s successful underdog campaign against the tides of globalization that appears epitomized by the EU’s trade agreement with Canada. After seven years of negotiations, trade talks collapsed on Friday with Belgium’s French-speaking region of Wallonia vetoing it. Freeland abandoned CETA talks but has agreed to meet with Schulz to seek clarity on safeguards to protect labour, environmental and consumer standards.
